A Walnut Grove High School teacher has been relieved of his duties after a video surfaced showing him writing the ‘n-word’ on the whiteboard in his class while his (mostly white) students cheer him on. Robert Walker, a former teacher and wrestling coach at Monroe, Georgia, was the subject of the viral video, which showed him standing before his class with most of the word written behind him.
His students, who were wildly laughing and chanting, appeared to be spelling the word for him which he was writing down. After counting down from 5, the students loudly yelled out the last letter, ‘r’, which he wrote on the board, to wild cheers and excitement from his students. Walker himself was smiling during the exercise, which a student has described as a ‘game’.
Following the video going viral, the Walton County School District released a statement through their spokesperson, Patrice Broughton.
“Walton County School District is aware of the video that is circulating and we are investigating. The individual involved is no longer employed with the Walton County School District,” Broughton said.

According to journalist Cody Alcorn, a student reached out to indicate that there were several black students in the class and that the whole thing was a ‘game’ and that a black student suggested the spelling of the word.
“What the video doesn’t show was that there were multiple black students in there also laughing and cheering. The video was taken by one of the black students. The word was started by a black student spelling it during the game,” the student told Alcorn.
