A Utah nurse has been arrested and charged with aggravated murder after allegedly poisoning her former roommate with unprescribed insulin in a plot to claim a $1.5 million life insurance payout.
Meggan Randall Sundwall, 47, was taken into custody on Thursday following a months-long investigation into the August 2024 death of Kacee Lyn Terry, 38. Authorities allege Sundwall convinced Terry she had terminal cancer, though medical records and an autopsy revealed no evidence of the disease. Investigators claim Sundwall administered a fatal dose of insulin and other drugs to Terry, who was not diabetic, leading to her death five days later.
Emergency responders were called to Terry’s Highland home on Aug. 12 after her uncle found her unconscious and struggling to breathe. Paramedics discovered a diabetic needle at the scene, and hospital tests revealed Terry’s blood sugar level was dangerously low at 14. She was declared brain-dead shortly after being hospitalized.
Court documents reveal Sundwall had been attempting to kill Terry for years, citing over 28,000 text messages between the two dating back to 2019. These messages allegedly included discussions about ending Terry’s life and references to Sundwall’s financial troubles. Police say Sundwall believed she was the beneficiary of Terry’s life insurance policy and searched for it extensively after her death.
Authorities also accuse Sundwall of obstructing justice by deleting over 900 text messages from her phone. She is currently being held in the Utah County Jail on charges of first-degree felony aggravated murder and third-degree felony obstruction of justice.
The case has drawn widespread attention due to its chilling details, including Sundwall’s alleged manipulation of Terry’s trust and the calculated nature of the crime.
