Two men were killed in a shooting late Monday night in the Dixwell neighborhood, according to New Haven police.
Officers responded to reports of gunfire near Goffe and Winter streets at approximately 9:50 p.m., said police spokesperson Officer Christian Bruckhart. Upon arrival, officers found two victims lying unresponsive in the street. One man was pronounced dead at the scene, while the second succumbed to his injuries at Yale New Haven Hospital.
The victims were identified Tuesday morning as a 49-year-old New Haven resident, Clifford Capehart, and a 39-year-old Hamden resident, Keron Troutman.
Capehart was pronounced dead at the scene. Troutman was transported to Yale New Haven Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Police Chief Karl Jacobson revealed in a Tuesday afternoon press conference that detectives are still piecing together what happened. Authorities believe the incident was either a robbery or a drug deal gone wrong.
“We know that those two [Capehart and Troutman] were friends,” Jacobson said. “And we actually think this might have been a robbery or a drug deal gone bad, because of the evidence found on scene, but I don’t want to speculate yet. … They didn’t kill each other to our knowledge at this point.”
No suspects have been arrested yet.
