Two separate crashes in the early hours of Sunday morning claimed the lives of three people in Wake County, causing significant disruption to traffic on I-40.
The first and most serious incident occurred around 4:00 a.m. on I-40 eastbound near Gorman Street (mile marker 295). According to the Raleigh Police Department, a 2006 Lexus IS250, driven by 27-year-old Jonathan Perry Jr., was traveling the wrong way on I-40 when it collided head-on with a 2024 Volkswagen Taos driven by 37-year-old Alaina Mathews. Both Perry and Mathews died at the scene due to the severity of their injuries.
Investigators believe Perry entered I-40 eastbound from Gorman Street, making a right turn onto the interstate ramp in the wrong direction. Police stated that Perry smelled of alcohol, and an open container was found inside his vehicle.
All eastbound lanes of I-40 were closed for several hours while authorities investigated the crash. The lanes were fully reopened by 10:00 a.m.
In a separate incident occurring just minutes before the I-40 head-on collision, 23-year-old Pierre-Louis de Mourgues was killed while operating an RCB e-scooter on Gorman Street. Police say a vehicle traveling southwest on Gorman Street struck Mourgues from behind, dragging him down the road. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene, and Mourgues died at the scene.
The Raleigh Police Department is investigating both crashes.
