A mother, father, and son are dead following a violent dispute at a home on Bound Line Road Thursday evening, according to Wolcott police.
Michelle Cote, 55, of Colchester; her husband, David Cote, 59, of Wolcott; and their son, David ‘Dave’ Cote Jr., 34, also of Colchester, were identified as the victims. Michelle Cote worked as a correctional identification and record specialist at the Cheshire Correctional Institution since October 1998.
Police responded to a 911 call about a shooting at the home, where the family was helping David Cote Sr. move out. An argument erupted between Michelle and David Cote Sr., who were estranged for over a year. David Cote Jr. and his friend, who were outside, rushed inside to intervene after hearing the commotion.
According to authorities, David Cote Sr. allegedly pointed a gun at Michelle, prompting David Cote Jr. to try and disarm him. The father broke free and shot Michelle, who later died. He then shot his son, who also died at the scene.
The son’s friend, a registered gun owner, shot David Cote Sr. in what police described as self-defense. The friend is cooperating with investigators and is shaken by the events.
Wolcott Police Chief Edward Stephens called the incident “very unfortunate for everyone involved.” The town, known for its low homicide rate, is not considered to be under threat at this time.
Neighbors reported past disputes with David Cote Sr., including a long-standing feud over surveillance cameras and chickens. Despite these issues, there was no recorded criminal history at the address, and no previous domestic violence calls were made to the home.
Tara Richard, a neighbor, described David Cote Sr. as aggressive and frequently confrontational, while Michelle Cote was remembered as pleasant and nice. The police are continuing their investigation into the incident.
This world has gone to hell 😪 😕…. The friend of the son should get a metal for killing the father.
