An 18-year-old Clovis student was shot and killed outside a McDonald’s restaurant Wednesday night, prompting an ongoing manhunt for the suspect and leaving the community in mourning.
Caleb Quick, a senior at Clovis Online School and former Buchanan High School student, was identified as the victim by the Fresno County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office. The shooting occurred just before 9 p.m. in the parking lot of the McDonald’s at Willow and Nees avenues, police said.
Officers responded to multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire and found Quick suffering from at least one gunshot wound. He was rushed to a local hospital, where he died.
Witnesses described the suspect as a man dressed in all black with a hoodie pulled over his head. The shooter reportedly fled the scene on foot, and as of Thursday, remained at large. Police have not determined a motive for the attack and are urging anyone with information to contact the Clovis Police Department.
The restaurant was busy at the time of the shooting, with several groups of teenagers inside following evening events. Quick had reportedly left the Clovis Rodeo earlier that night to meet friends at the McDonald’s.
Quick was an active member of Clovis Hills Community Church, where a prayer room was opened Thursday to support grieving students and families. “He was fun. He was strong. He was athletic,” said Pastor Shawn Beaty. “He loved to worship. He loved the music at church”.
Clovis Unified School District Superintendent Corrine Folmer said extra emotional wellness resources and campus police officers were being provided in response to the tragedy.
Mayor Vong Mouanoutoua urged residents to assist police. “If you know anything, please contact the police department. That way, we can do our job and do it swiftly,” he said.
A GoFundMe fundraiser for the Quick family revealed the teenager was preparing to join the United States Air Force after graduating. The fundraiser raised over $5,000 at the time of publication.
