Four students from Archie Williams High School in San Anselmo died and two others were critically injured Friday night in a fiery car crash in Marin County, authorities said.
The six students were passengers in a vehicle traveling west on St. Francis Drake Boulevard when the car lost control and crashed into a tree on San Geronimo Valley Drive near Woodacre around 7:30 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. The impact caused the vehicle to catch fire.
Three students were pronounced deceased at the scene, while one other died at the hospital. Two other students remain in critical condition, according to the CHP. The identities and ages of the victims have not been released pending family notification.
“This is an incredibly heart-wrenching time for our entire school and broader community,” Tamalpais Union High School District Superintendent Tara Taupier said in an email to families Saturday. She added that the district is working with county officials to provide grief counseling and support to students and staff.
Taupier urged the community to avoid sharing unconfirmed information out of respect for the families and the ongoing investigation.
The crash has deeply shocked the close-knit community of Archie Williams High School, which is still reeling from a serious accident last year involving two juniors who survived a rollover crash near Woodacre.
