
Jay North, the actor who brought the mischievous comic strip character Dennis Mitchell to life in the beloved CBS sitcom Dennis the Menace, has died at age 73. North passed away peacefully at his Florida home on Sunday, April 6, after battling colorectal cancer for several years, according to his longtime friend Laurie Jacobson.
Jacobson shared the news on social media, stating, “Our dear friend Jay North has been fighting cancer for a number of years and this morning at noon EST, Jay passed peacefully at home. He had a heart as big as a mountain and loved his friends deeply. At last, he is at peace”.
Born on August 3, 1951, in Hollywood, Los Angeles, North began acting as a child in commercials and variety shows before landing his breakout role in Dennis the Menace at age six. The show aired from 1959 to 1963 and became a cultural phenomenon, with North earning widespread acclaim for his portrayal of the troublemaking yet endearing Dennis Mitchell.
Following Dennis the Menace, North struggled to transition into adult roles but found success in voice acting for animated series such as The Banana Splits Adventure Hour and The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show. He also starred in films like Maya and its television adaptation.
After retiring from acting in the 1980s, North worked as a correctional officer and counseled child actors through the organization A Minor Consideration.
North is survived by his wife Cindy Hackney, whom he married in 1993, and her three daughters from a previous relationship. His legacy endures through his iconic role as Dennis Mitchell, which remains a cherished part of television history.
