Jessica Aber, the former U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, was found dead Saturday morning at her home in Alexandria, Virginia. She was 43.
Police responded to a report of an unresponsive woman at approximately 9:18 a.m. and confirmed Aber’s death at the scene, according to the Alexandria Police Department. An investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death is underway, with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of Virginia determining the cause and manner of death.
Aber served as U.S. attorney from October 2021 until her resignation in January, shortly before President Donald Trump’s inauguration. She was appointed by former President Joe Biden and unanimously confirmed by the Senate.
During her tenure, Aber led a staff of about 300 prosecutors and support personnel across the state, handling federal prosecutions in areas such as financial fraud and public corruption. Before becoming U.S. attorney, Aber worked as an assistant U.S. attorney in the Eastern District of Virginia since 2009.
Colleagues remembered Aber as an exceptional leader and mentor. U.S. Attorney Erik Siebert described her as “unmatched as a leader, mentor, and prosecutor” and “simply irreplaceable as a human being”. Siebert noted that Aber’s professionalism and legal acumen set a high standard, and her accomplishments will be remembered and emulated by her peers.
Aber’s resignation came as part of the transition following President Trump’s inauguration. Her legacy as a dedicated public servant and prosecutor continues to be celebrated by those who worked alongside her.
