A Maui anesthesiologist was arrested Monday after allegedly attempting to kill his wife during a hike at the Pali Lookout on Oahu, according to Honolulu police.
Dr. Gerhardt Konig, 46, is accused of attacking his wife, Arielle Konig, 36, by striking her with a rock and attempting to push her off a hiking trail. Authorities said the incident occurred Monday morning following an argument. Arielle remains hospitalized in critical condition with severe head and facial injuries.
Police reported that Konig also assaulted his wife with closed fists and allegedly attempted to harm her with syringes containing an unidentified substance. The attack reportedly began after Arielle refused to take a photo with him during the hike.
Konig fled the scene but was apprehended later that evening near Pali Highway after a brief foot chase. He has been charged with attempted murder, and additional charges are pending.
The couple, married since 2018, resides in a $1.5 million home in Maui. Arielle is a nuclear engineer, while Konig has worked as an independent contractor at Maui Memorial Medical Center. Following the arrest, Maui Health confirmed his suspension and expressed its commitment to cooperating with authorities.
Konig previously worked for nearly a decade as an anesthesiologist at UPMC in Pittsburgh and served as an assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Medicine.
The Pali Lookout remained closed for the rest of Monday as police investigated the scene.
