Two people were killed – including entertainer, DJ the Rapper – and three others were critically injured Monday morning in a crash at the intersection of Piedmont Avenue NE and Monroe Drive NE, Atlanta police said.
The collision occurred shortly after 10 a.m. when a 2020 white Tesla ran a solid red light and struck a 2026 Hino box truck that was legally passing through the intersection, authorities reported. The impact caused the Tesla to become lodged under the truck, scattering debris across the roadway and blocking the busy Midtown intersection for several hours.
The driver of the Tesla, identified by the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office as 21-year-old DeCarlo Carneal – known professionally as DJ the Rapper – died at the scene. A 23-year-old female passenger, Jordan Jessie, also died from her injuries. Three other Tesla passengers—a 22-year-old man, a 26-year-old man, and a 22-year-old woman—were transported to a hospital in critical condition. Both the driver and passenger of the box truck were uninjured.
Emergency crews worked at the scene to extricate victims from the wreckage and clear the intersection. Atlanta police advised drivers to avoid the area while the investigation and cleanup continued. The intersection remained closed well into the afternoon.
Police continue to investigate the crash. No further details or names of the injured passengers have been released. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
The collision occurred near the Atlanta Botanical Garden in Piedmont Park, a heavily trafficked area of Midtown Atlanta.
