A tragic boating accident on the St. Johns River has claimed the lives of three people, with one child still missing, authorities said. The incident occurred on Friday evening when a boat carrying eight individuals capsized near the Dames Point Bridge.
Four people were rescued alive, while one person was pronounced dead at the scene. Over the weekend, two more bodies were recovered, including that of a child on Monday, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The search for the remaining missing child continues, with multiple agencies involved in the operation.
The deceased has been identified as Florida realtor Cristian Marin, his two children, and his mother, who was visiting from Colombia. His wife, Paula Valderrama, and three others survived.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, along with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Jacksonville Fire Rescue Department, Clay County Sheriff’s Office, and the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Jacksonville, are actively searching the area using SONAR technology and aerial assistance. The Coast Guard had initially suspended its search but later resumed efforts with community support.
Community members have rallied to assist in the search, using jet skis and boats to patrol the river. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is leading the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
“We have been working around the clock since Friday night to bring a resolution,” the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said in a statement, emphasizing their commitment to finding the missing child and providing closure to the families affected.
A community prayer gathering was held Monday to support the families of the victims, with a GoFundMe raising over $48,000 for one of the affected families.
“With heavy hearts, we share the devastating news of the passing of our beloved agent, Cristian Marin, his mother, and his two children in a tragic accident,” said the statement. “We ask the Florida Homes Realty & Mortgage family and community to join us in praying for their loved ones during this unimaginable time. 🙏Our deepest and most heartfelt condolences go out to his wife, family, and friends. May they find strength and comfort in the love and support surrounding them,”
