A 17-year-old autistic teen with physical disabilities identified as Victor Alicea Perez is in critical condition after being shot by Pocatello police officers Saturday evening. The incident has sparked protests outside the Pocatello Police Department as community members demand accountability.
Police responded to reports of a domestic disturbance involving two males—one allegedly intoxicated and armed with a knife—and a female at a home on North Harrison Street. According to a police statement, officers encountered the teen armed with a knife and were “involved in a shooting” shortly after arriving at 5:25 p.m. Video footage circulating on social media shows officers shouting commands before firing multiple shots within seconds of their arrival.
The teen was shot nine times, according to his family, who confirmed he underwent emergency surgery and required leg amputation due to his injuries. He remains hospitalized at Portneuf Medical Center.
Protesters gathered outside the police department Sunday afternoon, holding signs reading “Do Better PPD” and “What are Tasers for?” Critics argue the officers used excessive force against a minor experiencing a mental health crisis. “He wasn’t chasing anybody,” said neighbor Brad Andres. “It wasn’t a really dangerous situation”.
The East Idaho Critical Incident Task Force is investigating the shooting. The Pocatello Police Department has asked for patience as the inquiry continues and declined to release further details. Meanwhile, community members are calling for transparency and reforms in how law enforcement handles mental health crises.
