Former New York Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner and his wife, Jessica, announced the death of their 14-year-old son, Miller, in a statement released Sunday. Miller passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday, March 21, after falling ill during a family vacation.
“With heavy hearts we are saddened to announce the passing of our youngest son, Miller,” the Gardners said in the statement. “He was 14 years old and has left us far too soon. We have so many questions and so few answers at this point, but we do know that he passed away peacefully in his sleep.”
The family did not disclose details about the illness or the location of their vacation. They noted that several other family members had also fallen ill.
Miller was remembered as a vibrant and loving child who cherished sports and outdoor activities. “He loved football, baseball, golf, hunting, fishing, his family and his friends. He lived life to the fullest every single day,” the Gardners said.
The New York Yankees expressed their condolences in a statement, calling the organization “filled with grief.” The team described Miller as having “a spark in his eyes, an outgoing and feisty personality, and a warm and loving nature.” They pledged their unconditional support for the Gardner family during this difficult time.
Brett Gardner played 14 seasons with the Yankees, becoming a fan favorite for his grit and leadership. The Gardners also have an older son, Hunter.
The family thanked those who have reached out with support and asked for privacy as they navigate their loss.
