Annapolis police have identified the victim of a fatal shooting Wednesday night in the Robinwood community as 37-year-old Gregory Antonio Wells. The homicide occurred around 11 p.m. in the 1300 block of Tyler Avenue, authorities said Thursday.
According to police, stationary units in the area heard gunshots and responded to the scene, where they found Wells suffering from gunshot wounds. Officers and medics from the Annapolis Fire Department attempted life-saving measures, but Wells was later pronounced dead at Luminis Health Anne Arundel Medical Center.
Authorities have obtained an arrest warrant for William Delonte Hairston, who has been named as the suspect in the shooting. Police have not released details about a possible motive or the events leading up to the gunfire. Hairston remained at large as of Thursday afternoon, and investigators are urging anyone with information about his whereabouts to come forward.
The fatal shooting has prompted increased police presence in the Robinwood neighborhood as detectives continue to canvass the area and gather evidence. Annapolis police have asked residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
Wells’ death marks the latest in a series of violent incidents in Annapolis neighborhoods this year. City officials and law enforcement leaders have renewed calls for community cooperation to help stem the tide of gun violence.
