Authorities are investigating an apparent murder-suicide involving a Kingston couple after police say a man fatally stabbed his wife before jumping to his death from the Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge on Wednesday.
Town of Ulster Police responded to a report of a person jumping from the bridge around noon on April 23. Officers recovered the body of Caleb Smith, 45, at the scene and began efforts to notify his family at their Fair Street residence in Kingston. Upon arrival, police discovered the body of Smith’s wife, Kaleigh Griffin, 37, inside the home.
A joint investigation by the Town of Ulster Police and the City of Kingston Police Department determined that Smith stabbed Griffin to death shortly before taking his own life by jumping from the bridge. Both Smith and Griffin were residents of Kingston and had previously lived in Connecticut.
The couple were parents to two young children, who are reported to be safe and are currently in the care of family members, according to police.
The New York State Police and the Ulster County District Attorney’s Office are assisting in the ongoing investigation. Authorities have not released further details about the circumstances leading up to the incident.
