At least six people were injured in a shooting Thursday at Florida State University’s Tallahassee campus near the Student Union, officials confirmed. One victim is in critical condition, while five others are in serious condition, according to Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare.
The university issued an active shooter alert on its social media platform X, warning students and staff to shelter in place, secure all doors and windows, and await further instructions as law enforcement responded to the scene. The Tallahassee Police Department, Leon County Sheriff’s Office, Florida Department of Law Enforcement, and FBI agents were all actively engaged in managing the incident.
A suspect has been taken into custody, though authorities continue to search for any additional possible shooters. The university canceled all classes and events for the day, including athletic activities, urging the campus community to avoid the area.
Students described hearing sirens and alarms, with some fleeing the Student Union as officers arrived in force. Junior Joshua Sirmans said police escorted students out of the main library with their hands over their heads following the alert.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis expressed support for the FSU community and praised law enforcement’s response on social media. Rep. Neal Dunn called the early reports “very disturbing” and thanked first responders for their efforts. President Donald Trump was briefed on the situation and described it as a “terrible incident” during a White House press briefing.
This marks Florida’s sixth mass shooting in 2025, with the Gun Violence Archive reporting 80 such incidents nationwide so far this year. The investigation and response remain ongoing. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
