An estranged couple was found dead Monday morning in an apparent murder-suicide inside the Del Toro Insurance office building in Miami, authorities said.
Miami police responded to reports of gunfire at 42 Northwest 27th Avenue around 8 a.m. and discovered the bodies of Indiana del Socorro Guzman Mendoza, 32, and her ex-husband, Reynaldo Sandoval, 61, both suffering from gunshot wounds. Miami Fire Rescue pronounced both dead at the scene. No one else was in the building at the time, police said, and there is no ongoing threat to the community.
“It appears to be a murder-suicide at this moment,” Miami Police Capt. Freddie Cruz said. “We are not looking for anybody, so the community is not in danger. It appears to be an isolated incident, and this is very horrific and unfortunate”.
Family members said Guzman, originally from Nicaragua, had moved to the U.S. two years ago with dreams of building a better life. Her sister, Maria, described her as “very cheerful, very hardworking” and “100% dedicated to her work”. Guzman was employed at Del Toro Insurance, which released a statement condemning the violence and expressing condolences to her family.
Relatives and police said the couple had a troubled history, including allegations of domestic violence and recent restraining orders against Sandoval. Nearly two weeks before the shooting, Sandoval was reportedly arrested for stalking and violating a protective order.
Detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances leading up to the shooting and are seeking any information from the public that could help clarify the events. The company’s employees gathered outside the building in shock, mourning the loss of their colleague.
The investigation remains ongoing.
