A 34-year-old man was fatally shot Friday evening in the parking lot of Get Axed, an axe-throwing venue located at 768 South Jefferson Avenue, according to Cookeville Police.
Officers responded to the scene at approximately 7:52 p.m. after receiving reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, they found Ashton Bohannon with apparent gunshot wounds. Officers rendered aid before Bohannon was transported to Cookeville Regional Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead, police said.
A 22-year-old suspect was detained at the scene without incident and subsequently interviewed by detectives. As of Saturday, no charges have been filed, and the investigation remains ongoing. Cookeville police chief Scott Winfree told journalists the 22-year-old told authorities that Bohannon attempted to rob him and he shot him in self-defense.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Mr. Bohannon as they navigate this difficult time,” the Cookeville Police Department said in a statement.
