A New York City Police Department (NYPD) detective is dead after losing his ‘inner battle.’ David Rodriguez, a Gun Violence Suppression Division Detective, passed away in the early hours of April 5, 2025.
Rodriguez was a veteran officer who first joined the service in January 2008. He previously served in the NYPD’s 70th precinct as a member of the Patrol Borough Brooklyn South Specialized Units. He joined the Gun Violence Suppression Division in February 2021. Rodriguez is survived by his wife and three kids: DJ, Mason, and Ramon.
D-Rod, as friends and family fondly called Rodriguez, loved baseball and was a core member of the NYPD baseball team, NY Finest. The team organized a fundraiser on the website, Fund the First, to aid the late officer’s family. At the time of publication, the fundraiser had nearly matched its $30,000 goal.
Rodriguez was remembered as a dedicated officer who served his community well. “You have served the people of this community as well as protected them,” said Hakim Gibson, a photographer who runs a law enforcement support page on social media and frequently worked with the NYPD. Sharing previous photographs he had taken of Rodriguez, Gibson wrote: “You have put your life at risk on a daily basis to ensure the safety and security of our city. You are out here doing God’s work,”
