A Michigan City police officer shot and killed an armed man who fled during a traffic stop Friday evening, according to the Indiana State Police.
The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. in the 5800 block of South Franklin Street. Officers had stopped a red Dodge SUV for an equipment violation when the suspect, identified as Jorge Meza, 21, of South Bend, fled on foot. Police reported that Meza was armed, prompting officers to pursue him. During the chase, one officer discharged their firearm, striking Meza.
Emergency responders provided first aid at the scene before transporting Meza to Franciscan Health Hospital in Michigan City, where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy is scheduled for Sunday through the LaPorte County Coroner’s Office.
The officer involved has been placed on paid administrative leave, following department policy. The Indiana State Police are conducting an investigation into the shooting, which includes reviewing body camera footage and in-car recordings. The findings will be submitted to the LaPorte County Prosecutor for review.
Michigan City Mayor Angie Nelson Deuitch addressed the community in a statement: “This is a deeply serious matter, and my thoughts are with everyone affected.
