A high school track meet turned tragic Wednesday morning when Austin Metcalf, a 17-year-old student-athlete, was fatally stabbed during an altercation at David Kuykendall Stadium. The suspect, Karmelo Anthony, also 17, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder.
The incident occurred around 10 a.m. during the District 11-5A track and field championships involving multiple schools in the Frisco Independent School District. Frisco police reported that an argument between the two students escalated, leading Anthony to stab Metcalf. Emergency responders attempted lifesaving measures, including CPR and blood transfusions, but Metcalf succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital.
Metcalf was a junior at Memorial High School, where he excelled in football and track. His father, Jeff Metcalf, described him as a natural leader with a bright future ahead. “He was going to turn out to be a great individual and impact this world with positivity,” Jeff said. Jeff added that his son had a 4.0 GPA and was MVP of the football team.
Metcalf’s twin brother, Hunter, witnessed the attack and tried to stop the bleeding before Austin died in his arms.
Anthony, a student at Centennial High School, is currently in police custody with no bond set. Authorities have not disclosed whether he has legal representation. Frisco ISD called the incident “unprecedented” and expressed condolences to the victim’s family and community. Memorial High School plans to honor Metcalf during school on Thursday and provide support for grieving students.
A vigil for Metcalf was planned for Wednesday night at Hope Fellowship Church in Frisco. A fundraiser for Metcalf raised almost $60,000 at the time of publication.
The investigation into the stabbing remains ongoing, with police urging anyone with information to contact them.
