Two people were killed early Sunday morning when a Tesla Model S crashed while traveling the wrong way on Highway 288, authorities said.
The Manvel Police Department reported that the accident occurred around 2:29 a.m. just north of Croix Road. The vehicle was heading southbound in the northbound express lanes when it collided with a concrete barrier, bursting into flames upon impact.
When first responders arrived, the car was fully engulfed. The driver and passenger were pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities identified the victims as 45-year-old Alexander Cromwell of Houston and 36-year-old Janica Oliphint of Pearland.
Investigators believe speed played a role in the crash, though it remains unclear if alcohol was a factor. Toxicology results are pending.
Debris from the wreckage scattered across the highway, leading to the temporary closure of the northbound lanes and the entrance ramp to the toll road. A hazmat team assisted in cleanup efforts.
Officials said the flames reignited later in the morning, requiring additional efforts to fully extinguish the fire. By noon, Houston TranStar cameras showed crews still working at the scene.
All main lanes and the entrance ramp have since reopened as the investigation continues.
