A former teacher at West Rowan High School was arrested Thursday, March 27, on allegations of having a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old student over the past three months.
According to the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office, 25-year-old Christyan Alfonso Cabrera, who taught world history, was reported by a school resource officer for an alleged inappropriate relationship with a student. Authorities claim Cabrera engaged in sexual acts with the student in his classroom and other areas of the school between Jan. 9 and March 19, 2025.
Cabrera was charged with committing a crime against nature, statutory rape of a child, statutory sex offense with a child, and performing a sex act with a student. He was arrested Thursday just after 3 p.m. and initially held without bond at the Rowan County Detention Center. However, during a court appearance on Friday, March 28, his bond was set at $250,000, and he was released from jail by Friday afternoon. Cabrera is barred from any contact with the alleged victim or from being on school property.
Rowan-Salisbury Schools confirmed that Cabrera is no longer employed by the district. In a statement, the district expressed gratitude for the cooperation with local law enforcement and acknowledged the distress this news may cause students and families. School counseling staff will be available to support students, and anyone with information is encouraged to contact law enforcement.
Cabrera was also the men’s varsity soccer coach at West Rowan High School, having been named the South Piedmont Conference Coach of the Year in his first season as coach in 2023.
