A devastating domestic shooting occurred in Pembroke Park, Florida, on Wednesday evening, resulting in the deaths of a woman and three children. The incident took place at an apartment complex along the 3100 block of Hallandale Beach Boulevard. Authorities identified the suspect as Stephen McKenzie, 34, the father of the two youngest victims.
Pembroke Park police officers were dispatched to the area in response to 911 calls about gunfire. Officers found three deceased victims and one child in serious condition.
Julie Cruz, 32, and her children Xion Solomon, 11, Nova McKenzie, 2, and Emery McKenzie, 2, were pronounced dead at the scene. Phiinyx Solomon, 8, was rushed to the hospital in serious condition.
Stephen McKenzie, who shared the 2-year-old children with Julie Cruz, attempted to take his own life after the shooting and is in critical condition at HCA Florida Aventura Hospital. Mckenzie passed away a day later, according to WSVN, which also reports he suffered from bipolar disorder.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office is investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Charges against McKenzie are pending.
Neighbors expressed shock and sadness, describing the family as quiet and seemingly happy. Richard Rainey, who lives nearby, reported seeing McKenzie doing laundry about an hour before the shooting. He described the scene as traumatic, with multiple pools of blood visible.
Other neighbors recalled hearing multiple shots, initially mistaking them for firecrackers, followed by screams and then silence. They noted that the family appeared normal and loving, with no visible signs of distress.
Stephen McKenzie’s stepmother, Deon McKenzie, expressed shock and disbelief, describing him as respectful and loving towards children.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to support Phiinyx Solomon and her family with medical and other expenses.
